SAT Residence

A ranch style home built during the 1950’s, has served as a generational home for more than sixty years. The project considers the house’s past generation as a foundation for the needs of contemporary living. The addition of a second level for the new generation that would occupy the home for future years was based on a perpendicular organization of the volume to create outdoors spaces within, and without it assemblage. The second level, housing the bedrooms, rests perpendicular to the main level, thus revolving the generational axis. Meanwhile, a portion of the front yard is subtracted, creating a courtyard for the project’s home office and entry bridge under the canopy of the second story volume. The open floor plan methodically embraces the site’s solar radiance, unfolding an abundance of natural, interior lighting. Meaningful demarcations are in the east and south windows with extended laser cut aluminum "Pattern Maker" as the sun’s formal movement makes patterns on the exterior siding and interior white volumes. The elevated outdoor green space visually connects the top outdoor space with the lowest enclosure of the recessed courtyard. Spaces and experiences are not only created by walls and roof, but also by the spaces created by the volumes themselves.
